The practice began in 1981 and is now based in Brooklyn, Pretoria. Over the years, its focus narrowed toward diabetes as the area it concentrated on, and around 2000it became a dedicated diabetes care facility.
Many patients return for ongoing assessment and management over years rather than weeks, and the practice has also consulted with people from further afield across the African continent.

From around 2000, the practice became a dedicated diabetes care facility.
The practice developed into a dedicated diabetes care facility around 2000, concentrating its attention on the assessment and ongoing management of diabetes rather than the broader range of care it offered in its earlier years.
That focus is reflected in the services the practice offers today — from first diagnosis and assessment through to medication management, insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring, obesity management and the care of diabetes-related complications.
Practitioner education
The clinicians describe themselves as experienced diabetologists and report invitations to deliver medical practitioner training and updates.
Part of how the practice describes its clinicians' experience is the work they have done sharing knowledge with other medical practitioners — delivering training and updates on diabetes care.
That engagement with other practitioners reflects the practice's commitment to staying current with developments in diabetes management and bringing that experience to the people it sees.
Patients from different communities
The practice consults with patients locally, nationally and from African states.
Diabetes Care Centre sees patients from Pretoria and the surrounding communities, and has also consulted with people from further afield across the African continent.
